Cannarella was the 2023 ACC freshman of the year after a season in which he hit .388 with 24 stolen bases. He had another lights-out season in 2024 when he upped his home run total from seven to 11 while playing through a shoulder injury that put the brakes on his baserunning. Cannarella had labrum surgery before the 2025 season and once again hit well over .300 as a junior and is a career .360/.453/.551 hitter. A thin-framed, 6-foot center fielder, Cannarella stands out for his athleticism, defense and hitting chops. He has an open stance and a noisy setup with his hands, but generally makes high-quality swing decisions with above-average contact ability that leads to sharp line drives to all fields. He’s very much a hit-over-power offensive player who hit just three home runs as a junior and might never hit many more than 10 per season in pro ball. Cannarella is an excellent center fielder who uses his plus speed and standout instincts to track down balls in the gaps and make spectacular catches. His arm is a lingering concern. Cannarella hasn’t thrown much beyond 90 feet while warming up and in between innings and often lobs the ball to the infield in games. He’s not back to 100% and might wind up with a well below-average arm when he’s fully recovered. Cannarella’s no-doubt center field profile and above-average hit tool could still land him in the back of the first round.

Track Record: Cannarella burst onto the scene as the 2023 ACC freshman of the year after hitting .388 with 24 stolen bases at Clemson. He followed with another standout campaign in 2024, increasing his home run total from seven to 11 despite playing through a shoulder injury that limited his running game and ability to throw. After having labrum surgery before the 2025 season, Cannarella returned to form as a junior. He cemented his offensive reputation as a career .360/.453/.551 hitter, and the Marlins drafted him 43rd overall and signed him for a slightly over-slot bonus of $2,277,425. He batted .284/.337/.375 with six doubles in 22 games during his pro debut with High-A Beloit.
Scouting Report: A wiry 6-foot center fielder, Cannarella stands out for his exceptional athleticism, defense and pure hitting ability. The lefthanded batter hits from an open stance with a somewhat busy hand load, but he consistently makes quality swing decisions and above-average contact to produce sharp line drives to all fields. Offensively, he’s a clear hit-over-power player—he hit just three home runs as a junior and is unlikely to exceed double digits in pro ball—but his advanced barrel control and feel for the zone give him a realistic chance to remain a .300 hitter. Cannarella’s calling card is his defense. His plus speed and outstanding instincts make him a natural in center field, where he routinely tracks down balls in the gaps and makes highlight-reel plays. His arm strength remains a concern. It was below-average even before his labrum injury and has since regressed further.
The Future: Cannarella’s near-elite center field defense and above-average hit tool make him worth the gamble even if his arm strength never fully returns. He’s expected to open 2026 back at High-A Beloit.

Following an outstanding freshman season in 2023 where he took home ACC Freshman of the Year honors, Cannarella hit .337/.417/.561 in 2024 with 16 doubles, 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in 58 games in 2024. Cannarella has a wiry and athletic frame at 6-feet, 175 pounds. He has an open stance in the box with a semi-high handset. While there are some moving parts in his swing, he is consistently on time and in a good hitter’s position. Cannarella has above-average bat speed and uses all fields, but his ability to generate quality contact to the opposite field is especially impressive. He has excellent bat-to-ball skills and in 2024 had a 91% in-zone contact rate, including 92% against fastballs. Cannarella is an outstanding defender in center field and has a quick first step with great instincts. Both his speed and raw athleticism shine. He covers a ton of ground in all directions and makes big-time plays on a regular basis. Cannarella played through a shoulder injury in 2024 and had labrum surgery after the season. When healthy his arm is average, but his speed, athleticism and baseball sense will allow him to stick in center long term.
