Dix is the top prospect out of the state of Wisconsin in the 2024 class, and when he was an underclassman there were scouts who believed he was more advanced at the same stage than fellow Wisconsin product—and 2016 first-rounder—Gavin Lux. A switch-hitting shortstop with a 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame, Dix is a standout athlete with a lean build and broad shoulders with quick-twitch actions on the defensive side. His swing is compact and fluid from both sides of the plate, with bat speed and strength that should allow him to hit for both average and power. His approach is mature for his age, and he’s done a nice job staying back on breaking stuff, handling velocity, using all fields and getting on plane with a variety of pitch types and locations. Dix is an above-average runner with a powerful running stride who moves well underway and has the tools to perhaps stick at shortstop as well. He had right shoulder surgery last fall but has shown solid arm strength when healthy and has reliable hands, defensive actions and an ability to throw from multiple angles. Dix has played all over the infield and could easily profile at third base or second base as well. He’s committed to Wake Forest but could fit as a top-three rounds pick.

Track Record: A well-regarded high school player in Whitefish Bay, Wis., Dix saw his draft stock slip in 2024 due to a shoulder injury that ultimately required surgery for a torn labrum. The Diamondbacks, who liked him before the injury, drafted him anyway with the 35th overall pick with the hope that he fully recovers from the procedure. So far, that hasn’t happened, but with his first full pro season under his belt, Dix looks intriguing anyway as an athletic, hitterish and hard-nosed player. He began 2025 in the Arizona Complex League before moving up to Low-A Visalia at the end of June.
Scouting Report: The switch-hitting Dix has pure, natural swings from both sides of the plate. He offsets long levers with good bat speed and solid bat-to-ball ability. His production in 2025 was just fair, but he has a strong hit tool foundation with few red flags. He sees and handles fastballs and offspeeds well, isn’t too passive or aggressive, uses the whole field and doesn’t hit too many balls on the ground. Those are the sort of attributes that, assuming Dix adds strength to his athletic-looking frame, suggest at least an above-average hitter with average power, if not more. His arm remains a concern. Some think it is fringy but playable at second base, others say it will force a position change, either to first base or the outfield. Dix is a good runner who stole 28 bases in 89 games in 2025. A confident and instinctual player, he is a gamer who makes winning plays.
The Future: Dix is an athletic, projectable player with a wide range of possible outcomes. If his arm improves, perhaps he becomes an offensive-minded second baseman. If not, his bat could still play at either first base, left field or even in center field, where some think his speed could give him plus range.

BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme.
Track Record: Dix was a well-regarded prep prospect for years, but he lost some luster entering his draft year as he tried to play through a right shoulder injury that ultimately required surgery for a torn labrum. The Diamondbacks had long viewed him as one of the top players in the class and stuck with him despite the injury, drafting him No. 35 overall out of the same Whitefish Bay program that produced Craig Counsell.
Scouting Report: Dix is a switch-hitter with a short, handsy swing from both sides. He looks looser and more natural from the left side. He has good feel for finding the barrel and a sound understanding of the strike zone. His power was limited in a post-draft camp, but his barrel control, combined with a big frame that has room to add strength, portends growth in that area. Dix has the athleticism, footwork and hands to play anywhere on the infield. His actions and baseball acumen point to shortstop. He will need his arm strength to return to its pre-surgery levels in order to stick there, something that had not yet happened as of the fall. He is at least an above-average runner with good baserunning instincts.
The Future: Dix has an exciting combination of athleticism, tools, feel for the game and physicality that makes him easy to dream on. If his arm comes all the way back, the D-backs will have found their newest legitimate shortstop prospect.

Age At Draft: 18.8
Dix is a talented switch-hitter with a 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame that has significant projection remaining. He has a lean, athletic build with broad shoulders and a compact swing from both sides of the plate. He has a mature approach at the plate, stays back well on breaking stuff and has a knack for barreling balls to all fields in games. The power has trended up for Dix over the past year and should become an even bigger part of his game the next few years given how much space he has to add strength to his frame. Dix stands out the most on the offensive side of the ball, and while he should continue to develop at shortstop, he could end up at second or third base in pro ball. He is committed to Wake Forest.
