Bradfield has tormented batteries with his blazing speed since his prep days with American Heritage High in Plantation, Fla., where he ranked as the No. 66 player in the 2020 class. Since getting to campus at Vanderbilt, he’s lived up to his reputation as a dynamic, disruptive speedster and lockdown center fielder who has hit .313/.427/.450 in 190 games with 130 stolen bases at a 90.9% success rate. Bradfield is a lean and skinny, 6-foot-1, 170-pound lefthanded hitter who has a level bat path that’s conducive to line drives and ground balls. He has a strong understanding of the strike zone and has walked at a 14.7% rate, struck out at a 13.5% rate and in 2023 made contact at an 87% rate. Brafield projects as a 30-grade power hitter in pro ball, but has sneaky exit velocities—an 87 mph average exit velocity in 2023—considering his size and overall home run production. Bradfield is an 80-grade runner who should pepper ground balls, line drives and drop bunts for infield singles, with consistently high BABIP numbers and elite baserunning. The Orioles signed him for a slot-value bonus of $4.17 million to bring him into their hitting program and help unlock his offensive ceiling. Bradfield spent a majority of his full-season debut in 2024 at High-A Aberdeen before playing the last month at Double-A Bowie. He logged a .729 OPS and 74 stolen bases—only the Rays’ Chandler Simpson accrued more—between the two levels while earning a minor league Gold Glove Award in center field.

Scouting Report: A year of affiliated baseball left no doubts about the potential ways Bradfield can impact games. His elite defense in center field and elite baserunning showed up at both levels. So, too, did his bat-to-ball ability—he swung-and-missed at pitches just 5.3% of the time. The contact quality is never going to be elite in terms of exit speeds or raw power, but the overall value of Bradfield as a player hinges on his ability to refine his contact to keep the ball off the ground and hit more line drives at good angles, allowing him to be on base more and utilize his speed. On that front, Bradfield made encouraging progress, cutting his ground ball rate from 70.2% in his pro debut to 50.2% in 2024. His late-season promotion to Bowie came with an even greater focus on swing decisions. Bradfield focused more on pitches he could hit at good angles and left the Orioles bullish on his offensive trajectory.

The Future: Bradfield’s carrying tools are the type that can get him to the majors. Any further refinement of the hit tool can make him a valuable table-setter in a winning lineup while also providing Gold Glove-caliber defense. Bradfield will be back at Bowie to build on his strong 2024 season there.

He signed for a slot $4.17 million as the 17th overall pick in 2023 and performed largely as advertised. Bradfield had an .802 OPS over three levels with more walks (26) than strikeouts (16) and 25 steals in 27 tries.

Scouting Report: Bradfield has a pair of elite carrying tools in his 80-grade speed and center field defense, which together create a pretty high floor for his major league future. Advanced baserunning instincts could put him near the top of the league in stolen bases throughout his prime. He was drafted into an organization that has a track record for improving hitters with particular traits, and when it comes to the ability to manage the strike zone and make consistent contact without much whiff, Bradfield certainly qualifies. He had an astonishing 2% whiff rate in his pro debut, and walked nearly a quarter of the time. Another of those traits the Orioles work with is consistent hard contact, which isn’t yet a part of Bradfield’s game and may not ever manifest. The Orioles hope Bradfield’s above-average hit tool can play up as he focuses on hitting the ball at good angles and producing line drives, which can make up for his well below-average power, even as he projects to add some strength in pro ball.

The Future: Provided he makes enough quality contact to let his speed and on-base capabilities shine through, Bradfield has the traits to be a high-level table-setter as an everyday center fielder with Gold Glove capabilities. The best runner in the prep class, Bradfield has posted sub-6.3 60-yard dash times, which are 80-grade times, and incorporates that speed in all phases of the game. A no-doubt center fielder, Bradfield uses his blazing speed to cover huge swaths of outfield grass, getting to balls in the gap that other fielders wouldn’t dream of catching. He’s more than just a fast runner though, as Bradfield consistently shows advanced route-running ability and has an elite first-step when reading balls off the bat. All of those traits combine to give him elite defensive potential at a premium position, and he also has solid arm strength. There are more questions about the offensive side of his game. Bradfield sets up with a wide stance and has impressive bat-to-ball skills, but he has well below-average raw power and there’s little in his frame to suggest he will ever grow into average power in the future. Instead, he should be a slappy, line-drive hitter who succeeds by putting balls into the outfield gaps, bunting and using his speed to collect extra-base hits and put pressure on the defense. His dynamic speed should be an asset on the bases as well, even at a time when stealing has become less of an emphasis in the major leagues. Bradfield could be a tough sign out of a Vanderbilt commitment, but he has the athleticism and game-breaking running ability that every team covets.
