Schmidt ranked as the No. 11 player in the 2027 class during the 2025 spring, then at the beginning of the summer he reclassified to become eligible for the 2026 draft. It’s a move that makes him one of the younger players in the 2026 class, as he will still be 17 on draft day. Schmidt has a strong 6-foot-4 frame with a blend of power stuff and pitchability for his age. Throwing from a slight crossfire delivery, Schmidt pitches heavily off a fastball that sits in the low 90s and has touched 95 mph. He repeats his release point to fill the strike zone with both his fastball and changeup. He sells his changeup well by maintaining his arm speed on a pitch that typically comes in 10 mph off his fastball, consistently disrupting hitters’ timing to catch them off balance. Schmidt throws a 76-81 mph slider that he shows some feel for, but it’s an inconsistent pitch that’s a lower-spin breaking ball in the 2,100-2,400 rpm range. -

Schmidt was one of the top players in the 2027 high school class but announced in 2025 that he was reclassifying to become eligible for the 2026 draft. Despite being one of the youngest players in the class—he’ll still be 17 on draft day—his performance on the 2025 showcase circuit showed he more than belonged and remains one of the top overall pitchers in the 2026 class. Schmidt has a strong frame at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds and works from a three-quarters slot that can get a bit lower at times. He repeats his delivery well and has advanced feel to spot a three-pitch mix that’s led by a 92-95 mph fastball that has touched 97. Schmidt attacks the zone with his fastball, and then goes to a slurvy 78-82 mph breaking ball as his go-to secondary. It’s a lower spin breaking ball that can blend between a curveball and slider currently, but it could become a solid-average pitch with more polish. Against righties, Schmidt favors an 85-89 mph changeup that he sells with great arm speed and has above-average potential. Schmidt is committed to LSU but has a chance to go in the first round.
