Carlon was used regularly in relief last spring for the Sun Devils and worked a 7.52 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. However, he tore up the Alaska League on both sides of the baseball and took home league MVP honors. On the bump, Carlon pitched his way to a 3.08 ERA with 31 strikeouts across 26.1 innings, while as a hitter he posted a .349/.431/.476 slash line with five doubles, three home runs and 18 RBIs. This spring, he was Arizona State’s most trusted arm and pitched to a 3.33 ERA with 86 strikeouts to 24 walks across 54 innings. A strapping 6-foot-5 southpaw, Carlon has an effective two-pitch mix that consists of a mid-90s fastball and a mid-to-upper-80s gyro slider that is undoubtedly the best pitch in his arsenal. It’s a pitch for which he has an advanced feel, and it generated an eye-popping 56% whiff rate. Carlon moves well on the mound and could make the jump into the rotation come 2026, though he’ll need to continue to refine his command and develop a viable third pitch. -

Carlon has pitched as a reliever for two seasons with Arizona State. He made a huge leap as a sophomore, going from a 7.75 ERA and 17.3% strikeout rate in 2024 to a 3.33 ERA and 38.7% strikeout rate in 2025—a top-five strikeout rate in the country among pitchers with at least 50 innings. A 6-foot-5, 230-pound lefthander, Carlon pitches off a heavy diet of fastballs and sliders. He averaged 94 mph in 2025 and has been up to 98, and he uses a hard, mid-80s gyro slider almost half the time. It’s understandable why that’s the case, as opposing batters managed a 56% miss rate and hit just .163 against it. Carlon does have a slower curveball and a mid-80s changeup, but he rarely uses either pitch. He’s a below-average strikethrower who will need to improve in a big way if he wants to profile as a starter.
