  With a strong, compact build, Shepard stands out for his smooth, easy actions in the batter’s box and in the field. As an underclassman, Shepard was one of the most difficult players in the country to strike out, using a quick, compact lefthanded swing with good hand-eye coordination and plate coverage to make contact at a high clip with all pitch types. He goes with where the ball is pitched, using an adjustable swing to fire line drives to all fields and get on base at a high clip. To start the 2025 circuit, Shepard has shown more swing-and-miss than in the past with his timing getting out of sync, but he has also made significant strength gains that have led to big pull power when he lets it loose. Shepard is fundamentally sound at shortstop, where he has good footwork, hands and instincts, though some scouts think he could flip over to second base as he gets closer to the big leagues. Shepard has experience at catcher too, but his game projects well as a middle infielder.
