BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: Monegro was a lanky, long-levered righthander when the Red Sox signed him at 17 years old for $35,000, but he’s gotten stronger while developing his mix. After a rough U.S. debut in the Florida Complex League in 2022, he dominated across three levels in 2023, compiling a 2.06 ERA and 35% strikeout rate. Monegro’s start to 2024 represented a step back. He was slowed by the need to strengthen his shoulder, then struggled in the first half. He found his footing down the stretch, forging a 0.41 ERA with a 33% strikeout rate and .114 opponent average in his last 44 innings.
Scouting Report: Monegro sits at roughly 94 mph with both his four-seamer and sinker, but his fastballs lack the movement or deception to get swings and misses. Instead, he relies on tunneling and mixing pitches while working to different parts of the zone. Monegro reshaped his gyro slider into an 86-90 mph cutter with depth. It’s a pitch that generated swing-and-miss and became the anchor of his arsenal that he used just over 40% of the time. He balances that with his four-seamer, sinker, 12-to-6 curveball and a developing splitter that flashed good depth. It’s a mix that can flummox hitters.
The Future: Monegro likely will start 2025 in Double-A Portland’s rotation. He has No. 5 starter potential, but can elevate that if his velocity improves with a diligent offseason.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Monegro had the lanky build of a basketball player as an amateur when the Red Sox signed him for $35,000 shortly before the 2020 coronavirus shutdown. In pro ball, he has gained strength, power and shown the ability to develop pitches to attack different parts of the zone. After a poor Florida Complex League season in 2022, when he posted a 7.36 ERA and 12% walk rate, he made a major jump in stuff and command in 2023 and sprinted from the FCL to High-A Greenville.
Scouting Report: In 2023, Monegro attacked the strike zone with three pitches that project as average or better. His four-seamer has solid velocity, averaging just under 95 mph, and plays well at the top of the zone. His 12-to-6 curveball got plenty of swings-and-misses against Class A hitters, and his 88-90 mph cutter improved his ability to compete in the strike zone and keep hitters off his fastball. Monegro also has a two-seamer and splitter, though the latter is a work in progress. In order to stick as a starter, he’ll likely need to either sharpen one of his pitches into a plus offering or develop the splitter into a solid offering.
The Future: After racing across three levels in 2023, Monegro should open 2024 in High-A Greenville and could reach the upper levels by the end of the year. He has a chance to be a back-of-the-rotation starter or middle-innings reliever.
