While the majority of prospects in Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects and Top 30s are from the United States, a number of other countries are also well represented. To help spotlight this diversity in nationality, we’re ranking the best current prospects in a wide variety of countries. We are using a player’s birth country, although in some cases, that may differ from where a player grew up.

Best MLB Player Ever: Fernando Valenzuela
Lefthander Fernando Valenzuela is not only the best Mexican-born player to play in MLB, he remains the one who set the stage for many who followed. “Fernandomania” swept Los Angeles and the country by storm in 1981. From 1981-1986, Valenzuela made the all-star team in six consecutive seasons, led the league in strikeouts and innings pitched in a Cy Young- and Rookie of the Year-winning 1981 season and led the league in complete games twice. He finished his career 173-153, 3.54 with nearly 3,000 innings pitched.
Best MLB Player Now: Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk has done solid work behind the plate while providing above-average offense. First baseman Jonathan Aranda was an All-Star for the Rays this year and is hitting .316/.394/.478. Andrés Muñoz is a very reliable closer for the Mariners. This year he’s 3-2, 1.69 with 32 saves in 53.1 innings.
Top Prospect: Tirso Ornelas
Padres outfielder Tirso Ornelas made a brief appearance in the majors this this for his MLB debut. He’s battled injuries this year that slowed him earlier in the season, but he’s been a solid producer at Triple-A El Paso.
Lefthander Omar Cruz also made his MLB debut with the Padres earlier this year. No team scouts Mexico more consistently. In addition to the prospects listed below, the Padres have Fernando Sanchez and Manuel Castro in their system and had Brandon Valenzuela until he was recently traded.
